Handy Hints Construction of Retaining Walls
When constructing retaining walls in natural ground, holes should be
augered to
the required depth plus an additional 100mm for gravel drain. Backfill
with
concrete with maximum 10mm aggregate, cement content minimum 450kg per
m3, water/ cement ratio = 0.55. Alternatively, a pre-mixed concrete
may be used.
The slope of the ground in front of the wall should be a maximum of
1:6. If the
slope is steeper, advice should be sought from a structural engineer.
The backfill material behind the wall should be clean sand, gravel or
coarse grain
soil without fine particles. Geotextile can be placed on the inside
face of the wall
to prevent wash-out of backfill. Lay a slotted polythene pipe (ag-drain)
at the base
of the wall and extend it to a free draining outlet. NOTE: Retaining
walls over 1
metre may need council approval. Please check with your local authority.
